Berks Ballet Theatre Celebrates 50 Years with ‘The Nutcracker’
The Berks Ballet Theatre (BBT) is set to celebrate a significant milestone with a special production of “The Nutcracker” on December 20 and 21, 2023. This landmark performance will take place at the Schaeffer Auditorium, located on the campus of Kutztown University, and marks BBT’s 50th anniversary. Tickets for the event start at $43 and can be purchased through BerksBalletTheatre.com.
As BBT commemorates half a century of dance excellence, this year’s rendition of “The Nutcracker” promises to honor the company’s rich legacy while showcasing a refreshed artistic vision under the leadership of Artistic Director Nathan Bland. Audiences can anticipate stunning choreography, vibrant new costumes, and the accompaniment of a full live orchestra, all hallmarks of BBT’s signature productions.
One of the highlights of this anniversary performance is the return of Jessica Bealer, a former BBT student and now professional dancer with the Rochester City Ballet. Bealer will reprise the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, symbolizing the enduring impact of BBT’s training programs. “Jessica’s return is a beautiful symbol of what this anniversary represents—generations of dancers whose journeys began right here at our studios in Berks County,” Bland remarked.
This year’s production of “The Nutcracker” will feature imaginative updates, including new choreography and stunning costume enhancements. Audiences will experience the debut of costumes for the Waltz of the Snowflakes, as well as refreshed designs for Marzipan and Candy Cane, all contributing to a more enchanting presentation of the Land of Sweets.
A cast of over 75 performers will grace the stage, comprising BBT’s Pre-Professional Company, Conservatory students, and community members alongside professional guest artists. The performance will once again be accompanied by the Reading Pops Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Willis M. Rapp, a Kutztown University alumnus who is celebrating his seventh season with BBT.
In addition to the performances, BBT is hosting a Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party on December 10, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. This festive event will take place at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading and invites guests to step into the enchanting Land of Sweets. Attendees can look forward to a preview performance of “The Nutcracker,” story time with costumed characters, festive crafts, and a selection of sweet treats and light refreshments. Tickets for this event are also available at BerksBalletTheatre.com.
The 50th anniversary production of “The Nutcracker” is not just a celebration of the past but a testament to the future of dance in the region. With a commitment to excellence and community engagement, Berks Ballet Theatre continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of dancers, making this holiday season truly special.
