CBS’s Sheriff Country Surges in Viewership Following S.W.A.T. Cancellation
Following the cancellation of the action drama S.W.A.T. in May 2023, CBS has experienced a significant boost in viewership with its new procedural, Sheriff Country. This series not only fills the time slot previously occupied by S.W.A.T. but has also seen a remarkable increase in audience engagement since its premiere on October 17, 2025.
The final episode of S.W.A.T. concluded a run that had defied cancellation twice, with Shemar Moore leading the cast as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. Despite its cancellation, the franchise is set to continue with a spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, which will feature Moore alongside a younger cast.
Sheriff Country has made a strong impression, achieving seven consecutive weeks of viewership growth. According to live and same-day data from Nielsen, the show has averaged approximately 6.24 million viewers per episode, marking an 11% increase compared to the same period during S.W.A.T.’s final season. Over a 35-day window, the show has accumulated 11.3 million viewers, positioning it as the second most popular new series behind the spinoff of Blue Bloods, Boston Blue.
The positive trend in viewership extends beyond traditional metrics. When factoring in multi-platform viewing, Sheriff Country showcases a 63% increase compared to S.W.A.T.’s viewership figures.
The series, a spinoff of the successful Fire Country, stars Morena Baccarin as Mickey Fox, the sheriff of the fictional small town of Edgewater. Baccarin’s character is straightforward in her approach to law enforcement, navigating complex family dynamics and a mystery involving her daughter. Other notable cast members include Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver, Matt Lauria, and W. Earl Brown. Following its December 19 episode, Sheriff Country will take a hiatus, providing viewers an opportunity to catch up on the series.
Meanwhile, the upcoming S.W.A.T. Exiles is currently in production. This new spinoff will echo the themes seen in Top Gun: Maverick, bringing Hondo together with a younger group of characters. Returning cast members include Jay Harrington as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay and Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, both of whom will appear in the premiere episode. Although the new series is filming, a release date or distribution platform has not yet been announced, although CBS may consider hosting it, given the success of Sheriff Country.
As CBS navigates this transition, the network’s programming strategy appears to be resonating well with audiences, reflecting the dynamic nature of television viewership in today’s landscape.
