Co-Creator Confirms Three Seasons for It: Welcome to Derry
The first season of It: Welcome to Derry has concluded, and co-creator Andy Muschietti has confirmed plans for two additional seasons, indicating a comprehensive narrative arc that spans three seasons overall. This announcement has generated considerable excitement among fans eager for more content from the franchise.
In a recent interview with Cinepop, Muschietti stated that the series was designed as a multi-season project from the outset. “For now, our intention is to complete this big story, which is the three seasons of Welcome to Derry, which is a story in itself,” he explained. He emphasized that Season 1 is merely the beginning of a much larger narrative, with ample storylines still to explore.
Muschietti’s comments imply that the creative team has already outlined the trajectories for Season 2 and Season 3, despite no official renewals being confirmed yet. The series aims to delve deeper into the mythology of Derry, examining the origins of the iconic character Pennywise, beyond what audiences experienced in the original It films.
Exploring Pennywise’s History
The narrative structure is set to follow a trilogy that aligns with Pennywise’s critical feeding cycles, as outlined in prior interviews with Variety. “Our big story arc involves three seasons, mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935, and 1908,” Muschietti noted. This approach allows the series to explore pivotal moments in Derry’s history, providing context to the terror that haunts the town.
The first season, primarily set in 1962, serves as a direct prequel to the 2017 film. Future seasons are expected to delve into the earlier cycles of 1935 and 1908, which are referenced in Stephen King’s original novel. Muschietti aims to uncover the “hidden story” and the “crumbs” left by King throughout the book, suggesting a narrative told in reverse. “I realized there was a hidden story there, and that Stephen King was leaving crumbs that could guide us somewhere,” he explained.
A Promising Expansion of the Franchise
With the finale of Season 1 now aired, the series stands poised to expand the It franchise into new and thrilling territories. Muschietti’s assertion that “nobody is safe in Derry” hints at a narrative filled with unexpected twists and intense drama, ensuring that audiences remain engaged and on edge.
Overall, the ambitious vision for It: Welcome to Derry promises a deeper exploration of familiar themes while introducing new elements to captivate viewers. As fans await further announcements regarding renewal and release dates, the anticipation for the next chapters in this eerie saga continues to grow.
