1,435 Couples Set New Record with Simultaneous Kiss in DC
A remarkable event took place in Washington, D.C., where 1,435 couples simultaneously kissed for five seconds under a stunning installation of mistletoe, setting a new Guinness World Record on December 13, 2023. This celebration, known as the “National Kiss Under the National Mistletoe,” was hosted by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District at Anthem Row. The previous record stood at 480 couples, achieved during an event by Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2019.
The event featured a 10-foot tall mistletoe installation, adorned with greenery, flowers, ribbons, and a jingle bell, suspended 30 feet above the crowd. Representatives from Guinness World Records were present to officially verify the record-breaking moment.
Community Celebration Unites Attendees
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Gerren Price, the President and CEO of the DowntownDC Business Improvement District, emphasized the importance of community connections. “Breaking a Guinness World Record title is an incredible moment for DowntownDC, but what’s even more meaningful is seeing our community gather and celebrate in the heart of the district,” Price stated. He highlighted that such events bring people together in memorable and joyful ways, showcasing the vibrancy of the city.
The record-breaking kiss occurred at 16:15 local time, accompanied by festivities that included live music from the Ellington Carthan Quartet, featuring Valentina Maria, as well as live art displays, photo booths, and food and drink offerings from local establishments like City Tap House and Root & Vine. The event was co-hosted by Sherrell Duncan of WPGC 95.5 and Rod Hendrix of 94.7 The Drive.
A Unique Aerial Art Installation
This year marked the second installation of the National Mistletoe at Anthem Row. Designed by My Ly Design, the aerial art piece aims to transform the downtown area into a festive haven, encouraging romantic connections and joyful interactions among attendees. Each couple that kissed under the mistletoe contributed to an unforgettable moment, reinforcing the spirit of the season.
As the event concluded, the overwhelming sense of community and celebration left a lasting impression on participants and organizers alike, proving that moments of togetherness can create lasting memories.
