Cross Installed on Tower of Jesus Christ at Sagrada Familia
Construction of the iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has reached a significant milestone with the placement of the first part of the cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ. On October 31, 2025, the lower arm of the cross was installed, marking a pivotal moment in the final phase of this monumental project. The tower now stands at a height of 162.91 meters, making it the tallest of the basilica’s central towers.
The lower arm measures 7.25 meters in length and weighs 24 tons. It was carefully positioned on the summit of the tower after being transported in four separate panels. These panels were assembled at a work platform located 54 meters above the main nave, where they underwent glazing, stonework, and interior finishing.
Design and Materials of the Cross
The cross, designed with double-twist geometry, transitions from a square base to an octagonal upper section. Its exterior is crafted from white glazed ceramic and glass, materials selected for their luminosity and resistance to weather conditions. When fully assembled, the cross will reach a total height of 17 meters—approximately the height of a five-story building—and have a width of 13.5 meters.
This installation signifies the culmination of architect Antoni Gaudí‘s original vision for the Sagrada Familia, which emphasizes a spiritual ascent culminating in light. The Tower of Jesus Christ serves as both a symbolic and architectural centerpiece of the basilica.
Upcoming Inauguration and Events
The inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ is scheduled for June 2026. This date coincides with the centenary of Gaudí’s death, making the occasion particularly significant. In the lead-up to the inauguration, the Sagrada Familia will host a series of special events and public celebrations, further engaging the community and visitors alike.
For those interested in the full program of activities surrounding this historic milestone, further information can be found at sagradafamilia2026.org.
In summary, the recent placement of the first part of the cross marks not only a key achievement in the ongoing construction of the Sagrada Familia but also a celebration of its enduring legacy and connection to Gaudí’s visionary work.
