Former Just Cause Director Unveils Teaser for New Game Studio
Former director of the Just Cause franchise, Christofer Sundberg, has launched a new game studio named Liquid Swords, which recently unveiled a teaser for its first project. The nine-second clip features a desolate, industrial cityscape that conveys a sense of abandonment, with only a few cars traversing the empty streets. The visuals suggest a tone reminiscent of gritty narratives, aligning with Sundberg’s vision for the studio.
Sundberg shared his thoughts on Twitter regarding the game, currently referred to as “Game 1.” He hinted that it will embody a style “more like … Mad Max …. Payne.” This statement reflects a clear preference for realistic and hard-edged storytelling, distancing the studio from traditional fantasy and sci-fi genres. “All respect to developers of fantasy/sci-fi games,” he noted, “but it’s just not for us.”
Founded in 2020, Liquid Swords aims to have a workforce of 100 employees by early 2024. The studio’s website emphasizes a commitment to a balanced work culture, explicitly stating, “no crunch!” This focus on employee well-being is part of Sundberg’s broader mission, which he encapsulated with the phrase, “Be accountable. Work hard. Be human. Win.”
The studio’s ambitions took a challenging turn in February 2025 when it made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce. This move occurred before the proper announcement of what it describes as “a narrative-driven, open-world, hardboiled AAA revenge story,” developed using Unreal Engine 5. The teaser released by Liquid Swords gives a glimpse into the gritty world that players can expect, aligning with Sundberg’s vision for immersive storytelling.
In addition to its creative endeavors, Liquid Swords has made headlines for its unique office culture, which features a collection of Air Jordans prominently displayed in its meeting room. This playful touch highlights the studio’s aim to foster creativity and a relaxed environment among its team.
As the gaming community eagerly anticipates more information about Liquid Swords’ debut title, Sundberg’s commitment to a clear vision and a healthy workplace stands out. The blend of accountability, hard work, and humanity may resonate well with players seeking a fresh take on open-world gaming experiences.
