“The Witcher Season 4 Debuts with Record Low Viewership on Netflix”
The fourth season of The Witcher premiered on October 30, 2025, but the debut has been disappointing for Netflix. Following the departure of Henry Cavill, who previously portrayed the iconic character Geralt of Rivia, many viewers were eager to see how the series would fare with Liam Hemsworth stepping into the lead role. According to an official report from Tudum, the new season garnered just 7.4 million views in its first week, marking the lowest viewership numbers in the series’ history.
In comparison, The Witcher Season 3 achieved 15.2 million views during its initial week in 2023, and even Season 2 outperformed the latest installment with 142.3 hours viewed. The stark contrast raises questions about the show’s future viability following Cavill’s exit.
Despite the initial reception, critics have expressed mixed feelings about Hemsworth’s performance. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 75% Critics’ Score but only a 46% Audience Score. In a review by Felipe Rangel for ScreenRant, Hemsworth’s portrayal received some praise, although the review noted a tendency for comparisons to Cavill, which could overshadow his efforts.
Netflix describes Season 4’s storyline: “After the Continent-altering events of Season Three, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies.” The synopsis hints at the characters’ evolving relationships as they navigate their challenges, suggesting that there may be new dynamics at play.
Despite the lukewarm reception, Netflix has already greenlit a fifth season, which is expected to be the final chapter of the series. Production for Season 5 was completed in October 2025, although a release date has yet to be announced.
As the fantasy series continues to stream on Netflix, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how the show’s trajectory unfolds in the coming months.
