Theater West End’s “Once” Captivates Audiences with Heartfelt Performances
Theater West End in Sanford is currently showcasing the musical “Once,” a poignant tale of love and connection that runs through December 21, 2023. Directed by Derek Critzer, this production offers a fresh take on the story of an unnamed young Irishman, known as Guy, who encounters a determined Czech immigrant named Girl. Their week-long journey together leads to personal transformation and musical collaboration, making for an emotionally resonant experience.
The narrative begins with Guy, who has lost hope in his musical aspirations. However, a chance meeting with Girl, a talented pianist, reignites his passion for music. The story beautifully illustrates how human connection can uplift and inspire, a message that resonates deeply in today’s world. Critzer’s direction allows this theme to unfold naturally without overwhelming the audience with sentimentality. The chemistry between the lead characters is palpable, enhancing the emotional weight of their evolving relationship.
Critzer, who also designed the production, focuses the spotlight on the central duo while ensuring the supporting cast shines in their own right. Woodrow Jackson Helms delivers a humorous performance as the enthusiastic Billy, while Jason M. Bailey brings quiet strength as Guy’s father. Notably, Andrew Lejeune portrays a bank manager with dreams of stardom, adding depth with a performance that transcends typical comedic roles.
In addition to the principal actors, the ensemble contributes significantly. Elizabeth Golden Curtis provides comic relief, and Clarissa Moon makes a striking impact as Guy’s ex-girlfriend. A particularly moving moment features Daniela Monzon Villegas and Baily Fier, who evoke strong emotions without uttering a single word.
Even with a talented supporting cast, the narrative remains compelling, largely due to the captivating performances of Valerie Torres-Rosario and Andrew Heidorn. Torres-Rosario reprises her role as Girl, having previously won accolades for her portrayal. Her performance in this production is even more impactful, showcasing her ability to embody the character’s sincerity and humor.
Heidorn, known for his award-winning work in “Tanabata,” excels as Guy, demonstrating the character’s emotional struggles with a relatable underdog quality. Both actors possess the rare ability to sing beautifully while remaining fully immersed in their characters, which is vital for a show of this intimacy.
The production also features live music, with Maura Sitzmann serving as music director. The enchanting soundscape enhances the show’s melancholic yet hopeful atmosphere. Critzer’s lighting design further elevates the experience, beautifully complementing the music and movement throughout.
As the show approaches its conclusion, a bank manager’s line resonates: “It’s a complicated business, this love.” This sentiment captures the essence of “Once,” making the performance a rich exploration of love and connection in a beautifully complicated world.
“Once” runs for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including intermission, at Theater West End, located at 115 W. 1st St. in Sanford. Tickets are available starting at $25. For additional information, visit theaterwestend.com.
