True North Theatre Launches ‘Cosmogenesis’ at Maine Planetarium

Theater enthusiasts and astronomy lovers alike gathered for the world premiere of “Cosmogenesis: The Story of Us” at the Versant Power Astronomy Center and Maynard Planetarium in Orono, Maine. The production, a collaboration between True North Theatre and the planetarium, combines live performance with stunning visuals, music, and a narrative that explores the intersection of personal identity and the cosmos.

At the center of the story is Lotus, portrayed by Sarah Chang, a college student on a quest to understand her origins. Adopted at six months old by an American couple, she struggles with her identity and her longing to find her birth mother, who left China for Kazakhstan. The emotional tension is palpable, as her adoptive parents—her mother, played by Holly Roach, and her father, Josh Harrison—navigate their fears about the impact of this search on their family dynamics.

A Multimedia Experience

Unlike conventional theater, “Cosmogenesis” is a multimedia extravaganza that incorporates film and live action. The creative vision of Rebecca-Sophia Strong, who serves as the creator, playwright, and executive producer, guides the audience through a visually arresting journey. In her program notes, Strong expresses her aim: “How might we generate solutions that nourish the children of all species for the next thousand years?” This ethos is evident in the immersive experience that leaves viewers both challenged and inspired.

The production builds on a previous collaboration between True North and the planetarium, where they presented Lauren Gunderson’s “Silent Sky,” a tale of female astronomers facing gender barriers. In contrast, the projections in “Cosmogenesis” are intricately designed, creating a cinematic feel that enhances the live performances. The creative team, including collaborators from the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado Boulder, has achieved a remarkable blend of storytelling and visual artistry.

Diversity and Representation

True North Theatre has made significant strides in diversity with this production. The cast features actors from various backgrounds, including two members of the Penobscot Nation, one Black actor, and Chang, who is of Taiwanese descent. Director Angela Bonacasa skillfully unites a talented ensemble of ten actors, fostering a strong sense of collaboration in the intimate setting of the planetarium.

Incorporating local culture, Strong has added a Penobscot origin story about Gluskabe, a cultural hero for the Wabanaki people, which deepens the narrative and connects the audience to the region. Chang’s portrayal of Lotus captures the complexities of her journey, filled with both hope and despair, as she seeks to find her place in the universe.

Supporting her are fellow students—Alan (played by Adrian Sockalexis), Theo (played by Josh Wescoat), Ruth (played by Nina Paradzick), and J. Lewis (played by Patrick “Patty” Morris)—alongside engaging professors, Sophia (played by Rebekah Novak) and Xavier (played by George Loring), who help the students navigate the vastness of the cosmos. The performances are both enlightening and entertaining, ensuring the audience remains captivated throughout.
