Wanda Sykes Reveals Will Smith Apologized After Oscars Incident
The fallout from the infamous incident at the 2022 Academy Awards continues to resonate, particularly for host Wanda Sykes. During the ceremony, Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke concerning Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Recently, Sykes provided an update on whether Smith reached out to her to apologize for the incident that overshadowed her role as a host.
In an interview with Variety, Sykes reflected on her experience hosting the Oscars alongside Regina Hall and Amy Schumer. She candidly noted that the slap had a significant impact on how the night is remembered, stating, “I loved working with Regina and Amy. But like you said, it got overshadowed.” Sykes expressed frustration that many people discuss the slap without acknowledging her presence and contributions during the ceremony. “Like I was in the audience or at home, watching TV. But I was there,” she emphasized.
When asked about Smith’s apology, Sykes confirmed that he did reach out after his public statement. She explained that she was ill at the time, saying, “I had COVID or a bad cold. I just texted to say, ‘Hey, I got your message. Thank you. I can’t talk.’ But he did call.” This revelation offers a glimpse into the personal ramifications of the incident, highlighting that the aftermath extended beyond the stage.
On the night of the Oscars, Smith’s actions led to significant consequences. After winning the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams in “King Richard,” Smith publicly apologized to Rock and subsequently resigned from the Academy. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences responded by banning him from attending the Oscars and all related events for the next ten years.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion about the boundaries of comedy and acceptable behavior during live events. Sykes’ comments underscore the complexity of the situation, where a single moment can overshadow the achievements of others involved.
As the entertainment industry continues to navigate the implications of that night, Sykes’ perspective as a host offers valuable insight into how such events impact not only the individuals directly involved but also those who share the stage. The Academy Awards, typically a celebration of cinematic achievement, faced an unprecedented challenge in the wake of the slap, prompting discussions on decorum, respect, and the responsibilities of public figures.
In conclusion, while the incident may have momentarily shifted the focus away from the awards, it has sparked ongoing conversations about the nature of comedy, celebrity, and accountability in the public eye.
