Billy Bob Thornton Celebrates Success in ‘Landman’ and Life
Billy Bob Thornton is enjoying a career resurgence with the success of the streaming series “Landman.” The show, which is currently in its second season on Paramount+, highlights the complexities of the oil business and has become one of the platform’s biggest hits. Thornton, now 70, credits much of the show’s appeal to its creator, Taylor Sheridan, who he says crafts characters that resonate deeply with audiences.
In “Landman,” Thornton portrays Tommy Norris, who has stepped into the role of president of M-Tex, a fictional petroleum company, following the death of CEO Monty Miller, played by Jon Hamm. Thornton describes his character as a reluctant leader, emphasizing, “He does not want to be a suit, because when you are a suit there is always something being thrown at you. I’m pretty much playing myself if I was a landman.”
The new season has not only garnered critical acclaim but also unexpected delights, such as the addition of renowned actor Sam Elliott to the cast, who plays Thornton’s father. With a sense of humor, Thornton remarked, “I told Taylor the other day, ‘I’m happy. You’re happy. The season is going so smoothly. Something must be wrong.’ We shouldn’t go there… to the negative. Enjoy the wins.”
Behind the Scenes and Personal Reflections
Thornton’s enthusiasm for “Landman” stems from its unique portrayal of an often-overlooked industry. “You get to watch a show that raises the curtain on a business that’s not normally seen on TV,” he explained. The series combines humor, drama, and emotional depth, showcasing how characters navigate their complex relationships and the challenges of the oil sector.
The camaraderie among the cast is palpable. Thornton noted that after filming, they often gather for dinner, with Ali Larter humorously insisting on better dining options, declaring, “We’re not going to that dump out there by your house! We’re going to a place with Champagne.” This sense of community seems to enhance their performances and contribute to the show’s success.
Reflecting on his early career, Thornton recalled the challenges he faced breaking into Hollywood. He was once told, “You’re too ugly to be a leading man, and you’re too pretty to be a character actor.” Rather than conform, he chose to embrace his individuality, stating, “I decided to just be Billy Bob Thornton.” This authenticity has undoubtedly shaped his diverse career, which includes memorable roles in films like “Sling Blade” and “Bad Santa.”
Personal Growth and Life Lessons
Outside of acting, Thornton is also the frontman for his band, The Boxmasters. He emphasizes the importance of enjoying life’s victories, large and small. “With age, I embrace where the day might take me,” he said, recognizing the beauty in life’s unpredictability.
Thornton’s journey has not been without its difficulties. He has openly discussed living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, dyslexia, and anxiety disorder. These experiences, he believes, can serve as strengths. “Sometimes what people consider afflictions help you in other areas of our life,” he stated, highlighting how his unique perspective aids his performance in the series.
His path to success was paved with various jobs, from working in a pizza parlor to truck driving. He views these experiences as valuable life lessons, believing that even mundane jobs can inspire creativity. “Everything can be inspiration for a different time in your life,” he noted.
Thornton encourages people to engage with others, emphasizing the value of connection. He stated, “The fans pay for my life. They allow me to do what I do—and I’m grateful. The point is to listen to people. Get into it. You can learn from anyone.”
As “Landman” continues to captivate audiences, Thornton’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of authenticity, resilience, and embracing life’s unexpected moments.
