Clippers Gear Up for New Season with Star Power and Experience
The Los Angeles Clippers are set to begin the 2023-2024 NBA season with a roster bolstered by significant offseason moves. This year, they aim to break through the first-round playoff barrier for the first time since reaching the Western Conference finals in 2021. The Clippers will open their campaign against the Utah Jazz on October 25, 2023, in Salt Lake City, with a focus on health and chemistry.
The Clippers adopted a win-now strategy during the offseason, adding former All-Stars James Harden and Bradley Beal to their backcourt, alongside veteran presence in the frontcourt with Chris Paul and newcomers Brook Lopez and John Collins. Central to their aspirations is the health of star forward Kawhi Leonard, who enters his 14th season with hopes of maintaining fitness after struggling with injuries in recent years.
As the Clippers prepare for their season opener, the average age of their roster stands at a notable 33.2 years, potentially making them the oldest team in the league. In contrast, the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, had an average age of just 24.7 years last season. Head coach Tyronn Lue acknowledged the challenges that come with an older lineup, stating, “It’s going to take us 15 to 20 games into the season to really understand our rotations, our chemistry, how we want to play, who fits.”
Kawhi Leonard’s health remains a focal point. The six-time All-Star played only 37 games last season due to ongoing knee issues, missing the first 34 games of the regular season. Despite these setbacks, he was a key player in the playoffs, averaging 25.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists against the Denver Nuggets. The Clippers will need him to remain on the court if they are to reach their postseason goals.
Off the court, the team is under scrutiny as an independent law firm investigates allegations involving owner Steve Ballmer and Leonard. The inquiry focuses on whether the Clippers violated NBA rules by funneling additional compensation to Leonard through a company linked to Ballmer. Both parties have denied any wrongdoing.
On the court, the Clippers’ revamped roster features a mix of seasoned veterans and young talent. James Harden, an 11-time All-Star, will be a crucial offensive catalyst alongside Leonard. Last season, Harden averaged 22.8 points, 8.7 assists, and 5.8 rebounds, making him one of only four players to achieve over 22 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting above 35% from three-point range.
The addition of Bradley Beal adds another layer of depth to the team. After two injury-plagued seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Beal is expected to bounce back. Lue noted, “Players of this caliber are very rare, and they’re hard to come by. You can put him in so many different spots, and he’ll find ways to score. He can create his own or he can play off the ball.”
The Clippers also strengthened their frontcourt with the acquisition of Brook Lopez, who adds size and experience, and John Collins, who was brought in via trade. Ivica Zubac anchors the center position, having averaged 16.8 points and 12.6 rebounds last season, shooting an impressive 62.8%.
The team parted ways with several players, including guards Norman Powell, Amir Coffey, Ben Simmons, and Patty Mills, as well as center Drew Eubanks. Despite these changes, the Clippers boast a deep roster with versatile forwards like Derrick Jones Jr. and Nicolas Batum, along with guards Kris Dunn and Bogdan Bogdanovic. Lue expressed confidence in the team’s depth, stating, “It feels good to have a lot of different options, combinations. Every night could be different, every night is going to be different. But we have time. We just got to keep getting better.”
As the Clippers embark on their season, the focus will be on building chemistry and ensuring the health of their stars, particularly Kawhi Leonard. With a wealth of experience and talent, they are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming NBA season, starting with their matchup against the Utah Jazz.
