A recent survey conducted by MedCity News and commissioned by Smarter Technologies indicates a significant interest among medical billing professionals in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance revenue cycle management (RCM) software. Over 90% of the 125 respondents expressed enthusiasm for AI-driven billing solutions, highlighting key priorities such as bill collection, patient financial services, and payer communication.

The survey, which included a diverse group of medical billing executives and support staff, aimed to gauge the perceptions surrounding current RCM technologies and identify desired improvements. Participants ranged from Chief Financial Officers to billing managers, representing healthcare organizations of various sizes. Notably, half of the respondents work at hospitals that handle between 5,000 and 10,000 patient discharges annually, while another 26% are employed by practices with over 10,000 discharges.

Smarter Technologies, an automation platform formed through the combination of three companies—Access Healthcare, the AI-powered revenue cycle platform Thoughtful.ai, and clinical insights provider SmarterDx—was created to assess interest in AI applications for RCM. The initiative, known as the AI Index in RCM survey, reflects a growing appetite for technological advancements in the healthcare billing sector.

The survey results revealed that a majority of respondents, 55%, have been working in healthcare for six years or more. This experience likely informs their views on the current state of medical billing, with many expressing dissatisfaction with existing processes and a desire for more efficient solutions. Participants outlined their preferences for seamless operations that would enhance their roles and improve overall patient experiences.

The findings underscore an industry-wide recognition of the potential benefits of AI technologies in transforming RCM tasks. By streamlining processes and improving communication between billing staff, patients, and payers, AI could significantly reduce the administrative burden currently faced by healthcare providers.

As healthcare continues to evolve, the integration of AI into revenue cycle management represents a pivotal step towards modernization. The insights gathered from this survey not only reflect the current landscape but also signal a future where AI plays an integral role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of medical billing operations.
