The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on October 30, 2023, that there were a total of 3,135 confirmed monkeypox cases globally in September. Notably, more than 80 percent of these cases originated from the African region. The data, which covers reports from 42 countries, also included 12 deaths attributed to the virus.

According to the WHO, the cumulative total of confirmed monkeypox cases from January to September 2023 reached 44,299, with reports from 93 nations and 180 deaths overall. The increase in infection rates has heightened concerns among health officials, particularly in regions where the disease was less prevalent.

New Reports of Clade Ib Monkeypox Virus

The latest report highlighted that several countries, including Malaysia, Namibia, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, detected the clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV) for the first time. This variant has raised alarms as it indicates the potential for further spread.

Additionally, new imported cases of monkeypox due to clade Ib MPXV have emerged among travelers in Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, Qatar, and Spain. The WHO’s findings underscore the ongoing challenges in controlling the transmission of this virus, particularly in light of its spread across international borders.

Health officials emphasize the need for continued vigilance and public health measures to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks. The WHO is working closely with member states to monitor the situation and provide guidance on managing monkeypox cases effectively.

As the global community grapples with the implications of these findings, the WHO calls for enhanced surveillance and collaboration to combat the spread of monkeypox and protect public health.
