Celebrate 162 Years of Star of India at San Diego Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is inviting the public to celebrate the 162nd birthday of the legendary vessel, the Star of India, on November 14, 2025. This unique event will offer free dockside entry for walk-up guests from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., allowing attendees to experience one of the world’s most historic sailing ships.
Built in 1863, the Star of India holds the title of the oldest active sailing ship globally, having completed an impressive twenty-one circumnavigations of the globe. Originally named Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music and poetry, the ship has been a part of San Diego’s maritime heritage since it arrived in the city in 1927. The Maritime Museum began extensive renovations in 1951 to preserve this iconic vessel.
During the celebration, museum volunteers will serve complimentary birthday cake starting at 12 noon, while supplies last. While the entry will be free for walk-up guests, donations are encouraged to support the museum’s ongoing maintenance and preservation efforts. Visitors may also choose to upgrade to a general admission ticket, which grants access to the entire Maritime Museum fleet and its various exhibits, including areas below deck that are not visible from the Embarcadero.
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is recognized for its excellence in restoring and operating historic vessels, relying on the support of its dedicated volunteers and staff. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the museum’s operations depend on donations, memberships, and visitor engagement. General admission tickets are available for $28 for adults, $20 for seniors and military personnel, and $15 for youth aged 6 to 17. Children under five can enter free of charge.
For those interested in a more comprehensive experience, general admission tickets provide access to all museum vessels and exhibits. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the Maritime Museum Ticket Booth located at Star of India Wharf, 1492 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101-3309. The museum operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last guest entry at 4 p.m.
As the Maritime Museum of San Diego prepares for this significant occasion, it continues to attract both locals and tourists, solidifying its status as one of the nation’s top attractions. Through self-guided tours, educational programs, and unique events, the museum offers a rich exploration of maritime history and culture.
