A Southeast Michigan high school athletic director has been placed on paid leave following comments made during a podcast that expressed support for a transgender athlete. Chet Hesson, the athletic director at Monroe High School, appeared on the podcast Uncloseted Media last week, discussing the scrutiny faced by a transgender player on the Ann Arbor Skyline volleyball team.

Hesson’s remarks came in response to a Title IX complaint filed by a Monroe family and Michigan lawmakers. The complaint alleges that Monroe Public Schools permitted the athlete to participate on the girls’ volleyball team and utilize shared locker room facilities during a match on September 9, 2023. In his podcast appearance, Hesson reflected on the challenges of being a young athlete under such public pressure, stating, “Whether they’re trans or not, just having that much negative (attention) on you and rhetoric is, like, incredible.” He added that dealing with this scrutiny is an experience he would “not wish on anybody.”

Community and Legal Repercussions

The incident has sparked significant discussion within the community regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes in school sports. In addition to the ongoing Title IX complaint, Hesson’s suspension has ignited debates about the balance between student rights and competitive fairness in high school athletics.

In related news, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office recently made public documents concerning the arrest of former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore. Moore was taken into custody on December 10, 2023, shortly after his termination from the University of Michigan. He faces charges of third-degree home invasion along with two misdemeanors. According to the sheriff’s office, Moore allegedly forced his way into the residence of a female staff member, with whom he reportedly had an inappropriate relationship. The documents include his booking photo and details about the allegations.

Funding Cuts Impacting Community Projects

The effects of recent legislative actions are also being felt across Genesee County. Republican lawmakers utilized a rare legislative tool to eliminate funding for various community projects, including initiatives aimed at revitalizing Flint. The cuts, enacted without the need for gubernatorial or Senate approval, have jeopardized millions set aside for development and community programs.

Organizations such as the Latinx Technology & Community Center are grappling with the consequences of these funding cuts. Despite efforts from state Democrats to restore the funding, the prospects appear uncertain in the Republican-controlled House.

In Jackson, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing the decision by the House Appropriations Committee to eliminate $645 million in community project funding. The council’s vote on December 16, 2023, specifically challenges the committee’s December 10 decision, which threatens local initiatives, including a $4.5 million grant for the Hayes Hotel project and $1 million for converting a former school into a homeless resource center. The resolution demands transparency from Jackson’s state legislators regarding their knowledge of the funding cuts and the actions taken to address them.

These stories collectively highlight the broader challenges facing Michigan communities, from issues of inclusion in athletics to the impact of legislative decisions on local development efforts.
