Central-Phenix City Red Devils Crowned Top Flag Football Team
The Central-Phenix City Red Devils have been recognized as the top flag football team in the United States for the second consecutive year, according to a recent announcement by USA Today. Under the leadership of coach Mitchell Holt, the team concluded their season with an impressive 57-game winning streak and a perfect record of 20-0.
In the final poll released by USA Today, the Red Devils surged to the No. 1 position after previously ranking third. They surpassed the former top team, Hamilton from Chandler, Arizona, and JSerra Catholic from San Juan Capistrano, California, which ranked second. The ranking system for high school football teams is conducted in partnership with the NFL and involves a selection committee of editors and writers from the USA Today Network as well as contributions from the USA Today High School Sports staff.
The Red Devils’ performance throughout the season was particularly noteworthy. They scored a remarkable 840 points while allowing only 39 points against them, a statistic that highlights both their offensive power and defensive strength. Their dominance was illustrated in the Class 6A/7A championship game, where they defeated Vestavia Hills with a decisive score of 46-7. Vestavia Hills finished the season ranked 12th in the USA Today Super 25 poll, while Moody, the 1A/5A champion, was placed at No. 22.
The Red Devils have now claimed the Alabama state championship title for the third time, further solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in high school flag football. USA Today noted that the competition for the top ranking was fierce, involving a three-way battle that included Hamilton and JSerra, both of which also secured postseason championship victories while maintaining undefeated records this year.
In reflecting on the season, USA Today stated, “In the end, the Red Devils kept pace with the historic 2024 national championship team and outperformed it.” This recognition not only elevates the profile of the Central-Phenix City program but also underscores the growth and popularity of flag football at the high school level across the United States.
As the Red Devils celebrate their achievements, their success serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and teams nationwide, demonstrating the potential for excellence in youth sports. The recognition by USA Today reinforces the importance of dedication, teamwork, and skill development in achieving athletic success.
