After the election of Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s mayor, concerns regarding his stance on antisemitism have intensified. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan Greenblatt publicly stated that Mamdani poses a “clear and present danger” to the Jewish community. This statement came during an appearance on the “Brian Kilmeade Show” on October 31, 2023, following Mamdani’s victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.

Greenblatt expressed alarm over Mamdani’s past remarks, which critics have labeled as antisemitic. He noted, “Hundreds of thousands of Jewish New Yorkers are alarmed, and that anxiety is well-placed.” The election results were announced late Tuesday night, marking Mamdani’s transition into an influential role in one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old former state assemblyman from Queens, has attracted scrutiny for his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada.” This phrase, often used by anti-Israel protesters, has been interpreted as a call for violence against Israel. Critics argue that such rhetoric raises significant safety concerns for Jewish residents in New York City.

ADL Initiatives Following Election

In response to these developments, the ADL has introduced several initiatives aimed at addressing and tracking antisemitism in the city. Greenblatt emphasized the organization’s commitment to holding Mamdani accountable for his actions and policies. The ADL has established a tip line for New Yorkers to report incidents of antisemitism, encouraging community members to document their experiences in various settings, whether at work, places of worship, or social venues.

“We will make sure that the authorities follow up,” Greenblatt asserted. Additionally, the ADL launched the “Mamdani Monitor,” which will track the appointments Mamdani makes and the policies he implements during his tenure.

Mamdani’s rise to mayor has also drawn attention due to his association with controversial figures. He was criticized for a photograph in which he smiled alongside Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who has a history of supporting convicted terrorists. This association has fueled further debates regarding Mamdani’s views and their implications for community safety.

Response from Mamdani

In light of the accusations of antisemitism, Mamdani has consistently denied that his criticisms are directed at Jewish individuals, asserting that they target the Israeli government instead. He previously stated that he would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to enter New York City, reaffirming his position during an appearance on “The Story” earlier in October.

Mamdani emphasized that New York is a city that values international law and aims to uphold those principles. This stance comes amidst ongoing conflicts in Israel, with the International Criminal Court accusing Netanyahu of “war crimes” in relation to recent military actions in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in over 67,000 fatalities, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

Greenblatt’s remarks highlight the growing tensions surrounding Mamdani’s election, as many in the Jewish community express unease about the future. As New York City prepares for a new chapter under Mamdani’s leadership, the implications of his policies and statements will likely continue to be closely monitored by both supporters and opponents alike.
