Dr. Brad L. Mortensen to Lead Utah State University as President
The Utah Board of Higher Education has appointed Dr. Brad L. Mortensen as the new president of Utah State University (USU), effective November 10, 2025. This unanimous decision marks a significant leadership transition for the university as it prepares to enter a new chapter under Mortensen’s guidance.
Dr. Mortensen, a first-generation college graduate, has dedicated over 20 years to higher education, emphasizing affordability and accessibility. His previous role as president of Weber State University (WSU) since 2019 has been marked by notable achievements, including the establishment of the first accelerated bachelor’s degree programs within the Utah System of Higher Education. His leadership also saw WSU’s dual enrollment program grow to become the largest in the nation among four-year institutions by 2024.
In a statement to USU Today, Mortensen expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is incredibly humbling and almost unbelievable as a first-generation college graduate to be named president of my alma mater, Utah State University.” His commitment to education is further exemplified by his successful fundraising efforts, securing nearly $400 million during his tenure at WSU to enhance academic, athletic, and research facilities.
Visionary Leadership and Future Goals
The Utah Board of Higher Education has voiced strong confidence in Mortensen’s leadership abilities. Amanda Covington, chair of the board, stated, “Dr. Mortensen is a visionary leader who understands the potential and responsibility of leading USU.” This sentiment is echoed by David Huntsman, co-chair of the Presidential Search Committee, who highlighted Mortensen’s “practical, student-centered approach” and his deep understanding of Utah’s higher education landscape.
Mortensen’s accomplishments also include founding the Miller Advanced Research and Solutions (MARS) Center, which has fostered partnerships with legislative, military, and industry leaders. These collaborations are expected to play a crucial role in advancing USU’s research capabilities and driving innovation in the region.
As Mortensen prepares to assume his new role, the search for an interim president at Weber State University will commence to ensure a smooth transition and continued progress for the institution. Geoffrey Landward, the USHE Commissioner, praised Mortensen as “a remarkable leader and selfless collaborator who always puts students first,” reinforcing the high expectations surrounding his presidency.
With a focus on enhancing educational opportunities and fostering a supportive environment for students, Dr. Mortensen’s leadership is anticipated to bring positive changes to Utah State University and the broader educational landscape in Utah.
