Ohio Lawmakers Urge Use of Rainy Day Funds Amid Federal Shutdown
As the federal government shutdown continues, over 1 million Ohioans face uncertainty regarding crucial food assistance programs, including SNAP and WIC. The shutdown, which began on October 1, 2023, threatens to disrupt federal funding for these programs, potentially impacting the provision of essential food benefits starting in November.
The anxiety surrounding this situation is palpable. Ohio resident Calhoun expressed her concerns, stating, “November benefits may be at risk.” She underscored the growing worry among many families, emphasizing, “It’s not just me, it’s a lot on the mind of many in Ohio.” This perspective is echoed by community leaders who recognize that the ramifications of the shutdown extend beyond political lines, affecting the daily lives of residents.
According to Mike Cochran of the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, the implications of the shutdown could be severe. “We serve 5,000 people a day,” he noted, warning that about 322,000 individuals could be affected by the potential suspension of benefits beginning on November 1.
In response to this crisis, Democratic State Representative Latyna Humphrey has introduced a bill aimed at utilizing state rainy day funds to temporarily support federal food programs like SNAP and WIC. This measure seeks to provide immediate relief until the federal government resumes operations. “Let’s be clear, grocery stores won’t stop operating, the bills won’t stop coming, the babies won’t stop needing formulas, and families still have to eat,” Humphrey stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The proposed bill is currently under review in committee, with plans for the state to be reimbursed once federal funding is restored. Democratic State Senator Hearcel Craig from Columbus also voiced concerns, warning that essential programs remain at risk as the shutdown lingers.
Community members, including Calhoun, are encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions. “We need them to stop playing politics and get their head in the game,” she urged, highlighting the human impact of political decisions. With the looming threat of losing food assistance, residents are advised to stock up on supplies to ensure their families’ needs are met.
As discussions around the bill continue, the community remains hopeful that swift action will be taken to protect vulnerable populations. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of government policies and the daily realities faced by Ohio families. ABC 6 has reached out to House Republican leadership for comment on Humphrey’s bill and is awaiting a response.
