Senator Jacky Rosen Seeks to Block Grocery Tariffs Without Approval
U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen has introduced legislation aimed at restricting the imposition of tariffs on food and agriculture products without prior approval from Congress. The proposed bill, named the “No Tariffs on Groceries Act,” seeks to mandate that the president must obtain legislative consent before levying any tariffs on essential grocery items. This announcement came on March 15, 2024, as Rosen highlighted the bill’s potential to alleviate rising food costs for American families.
The motivation behind this bill stems from concerns over the economic impact of tariffs implemented during the administration of former President Donald Trump. According to a recent report by the Democratic members of the Senate’s Joint Economic Committee, inflation-related expenses for American households surged by an average of $700 during Trump’s second term, with families in Nevada facing an even steeper increase of $941.
In her statement, Senator Rosen emphasized the importance of protecting consumers, stating, “I’m proud to introduce this bill to help lower the cost of groceries by stopping Donald Trump from putting tariffs on the everyday essentials Americans rely on most.” She expressed her commitment to advancing the legislation to counter what she termed “Trump’s harmful trade policies.”
The introduction of the “No Tariffs on Groceries Act” aligns with a similar bill already presented in the House of Representatives earlier this year. The legislative effort underscores a broader concern among lawmakers regarding the economic implications of unilateral tariff decisions made by the executive branch. The Constitution grants Congress the authority to regulate foreign commerce and levy tariffs, although over the years, some of these powers have been delegated to the president.
In a recent move, Donald Trump issued an executive order that rescinded reciprocal tariffs on various items, including beef, coffee, tea, and select fruits and vegetables. Despite this, Rosen criticized Trump’s promises made during his campaign to reduce grocery prices starting “on day one” of his second term, asserting, “Donald Trump lied to the American people when he promised to bring prices down ‘on day one.’ His reckless tariffs have done the opposite, raising grocery costs and making it harder for hardworking families to put food on the table.”
As the legislative process unfolds, the implications of this proposed bill could significantly impact the economic landscape for American families, particularly in light of ongoing inflationary pressures. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as the bill progresses through Congress.
