Veterans Face Mental Health Crisis: Resources Available for Support
November 11 marked Veterans Day, a time to honor those who have served in the military. Yet for many veterans, the challenges do not end upon returning home. Mental health issues significantly impact this population, with some problems, such as suicidal thoughts, often remaining unaddressed.
According to the most recent National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report from the Veterans Administration, there were approximately 6,407 veteran suicide deaths in 2022. This alarming statistic positions suicide as the second-leading cause of death among veterans, with firearms emerging as the most common method, followed by suffocation and poisoning.
The risk of suicide is heightened for certain groups within the veteran community. Notably, veterans aged 18-34 have the highest suicide rates, and male veterans are more likely to die by suicide than their female counterparts. Additionally, the period following the transition from active service is particularly critical; reports indicate that the suicide rate for veterans who have been separated for less than a year reached 46.2% in 2021.
Despite these grim statistics, numerous resources are available to assist veterans in need of mental health support. The Veterans Crisis Line operates 24/7, providing veterans access to immediate help irrespective of their enrollment status in VA benefits or healthcare. Veterans can reach out by dialing 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or engaging in an online chat at www.veteranscrisisline.net/chat.
Local resources tailored to veteran needs can also be accessed through the Veterans Administration’s mental health website at www.mentalhealth.va.gov.
In addition to these services, The Jason Foundation plays a pivotal role in suicide prevention efforts. Focused on raising awareness and educating the public about youth and young adult suicide, the organization provides information on identifying and assisting those at risk. Individuals seeking to understand the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicidal ideation can visit www.jasonfoundation.com for free educational materials and information on local affiliate offices.
As a society, it is essential to be prepared to support veterans who have bravely fought for their country. Understanding the struggles they face and leveraging available resources can make a significant difference in their lives.
