The Copernicus Sentinel-1D satellite successfully launched on November 4, 2025, at 22:03 CET (18:03 local time) from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. This addition to the Sentinel-1 mission will significantly enhance the monitoring of Earth’s surface, providing critical data for various sectors, including disaster response and environmental management.

The Sentinel-1 mission is renowned for its ability to deliver high-resolution radar imagery regardless of weather conditions or time of day. With the launch of Sentinel-1D, the satellite will operate alongside Sentinel-1C, positioned 180° apart in the same orbit. This arrangement optimizes global coverage and ensures timely data delivery, which is vital for climate scientists, maritime authorities, and environmental agencies that rely on up-to-date information.

Both Sentinel-1D and Sentinel-1C are equipped with a C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument. This technology captures detailed imagery of Earth’s surface, enabling comprehensive analysis of changing landscapes and environmental conditions. In addition to the SAR capabilities, the satellites are outfitted with Automatic Identification System (AIS) instruments. These tools will enhance the detection and tracking of ships, allowing for more frequent observations of vessel identity, location, and direction of passage.

When fully operational, Sentinel-1D is expected to improve the accuracy and frequency of AIS data, facilitating precise maritime tracking. Such advancements are crucial for maritime safety and environmental monitoring, providing stakeholders with essential information to make informed decisions.

The launch was conducted on the Ariane 6 rocket, designated flight VA265. The European Space Agency (ESA) continues to lead in space technology and Earth observation, reinforcing its commitment to providing valuable data for scientific and humanitarian purposes. As the Sentinel-1 mission progresses, the integration of Sentinel-1D is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing our understanding of global environmental changes.
