California freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has confirmed his commitment to remain with the Golden Bears following the recent hiring of new head coach Tosh Lupoi. The announcement came on Saturday, alleviating concerns regarding Sagapolutele’s future after a successful debut season and the departure of former coach Justin Wilcox last month.

Lupoi made a trip to Hawaii shortly after his introductory news conference on Friday to meet with Sagapolutele, which played a crucial role in the quarterback’s decision to stay. In a statement, Sagapolutele expressed his gratitude and excitement about continuing his career at California, stating, “After spending time with my family, a lot of prayer and many discussions, I have come to realize that Cal is the best place for me.” He emphasized his commitment to achieving his goals on and off the field and his eagerness to finish the current season with his teammates.

The quarterback’s decision is significant for the Golden Bears, as Sagapolutele has become a beacon of hope for the program. During the regular season, he threw for over 200 yards in all 12 games, making him the only player in a power conference to start his career with 12 consecutive games of at least 200 passing yards. He finished the season with 3,117 yards, 17 touchdown passes, and nine interceptions. His impressive performance earned him accolades, including being named ACC Rookie of the Week four times and the Davey O’Brien award’s national quarterback of the week on two occasions.

Cal’s general manager Ron Rivera expressed enthusiasm about Sagapolutele’s decision, emphasizing his leadership qualities and respect within the locker room. Rivera stated, “Jaron is not only a great quarterback with a bright future, but he is also a leader. He exemplifies everything about what it means to be a California Golden Bear.” Rivera has been actively working to enhance the team’s roster and ensure the retention of key players like Sagapolutele.

The Golden Bears concluded the regular season with a record of 7-5, which included notable victories over No. 14 Louisville and No. 25 SMU in November. However, the season was marred by a significant loss to Stanford, which resulted in Wilcox’s immediate dismissal. Following this, Nick Rolovich stepped in as interim coach and led the team to victory against SMU. He will continue to coach the team during an upcoming bowl game while Lupoi completes his responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Oregon.

Sagapolutele’s commitment is seen as a vital step in building a strong future for the Golden Bears, and he has encouraged others to consider joining the program. As the team prepares for the next season, his presence will undoubtedly be a key factor in their aspirations for success.
