Chris Woakes Embarks on New Chapter with Warwickshire Contract
Former England all-rounder Chris Woakes has signed a two-year contract extension with Warwickshire, marking a significant new chapter in his career following his retirement from international cricket. Woakes, who ended his England career after missing selection for the 2023 Ashes series in Australia, is set to continue playing across all three formats for Warwickshire, extending his commitment to the club that has been a cornerstone of his professional life since 2006.
Woakes’ international journey concluded after he faced challenges recovering from a dislocated shoulder, which he sustained during the final home Test against India. Despite his injury, he courageously batted with his arm in a sling during what would be his last Test appearance, finishing with a total of 62 Test caps. He also notably contributed to England’s triumphs in the ODI and T20 World Cups throughout his distinguished career, which included 217 appearances across formats.
Commitment to Warwickshire
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Warwickshire, Woakes expressed his deep emotional connection to the club. “For obvious reasons, Warwickshire has always remained close to my heart,” he said. “From training at the academy to signing my first professional contract, the club has been at every pivotal career moment over almost two decades.”
Woakes added that extending his contract feels like the beginning of a new chapter with a club he considers home. He is optimistic about the future, stating, “Looking ahead, 2026 already promises to be a fantastic year for domestic cricket. We’ve got a talented squad, with a good mix of youth and experience, and I genuinely believe we are in a great position to be challenging for trophies throughout the new season.”
Warwickshire’s Vision
James Thomas, Warwickshire’s performance director, emphasized the significance of securing Woakes for another two years. “Securing Chris’ signature means so much to everyone at the club. A true one-club legend and a bear through and through, he embodies everything that playing for Warwickshire should mean,” Thomas stated.
He highlighted Woakes as a role model for young players, underscoring the importance of his experience. “Chris’ experience with both bat and ball will be invaluable as we look to improve and develop our squad, which is now capable of challenging for major honours.”
Woakes’ ongoing presence at Warwickshire not only strengthens the team but also inspires the next generation of cricketers. As he prepares for this new chapter, fans and teammates alike eagerly anticipate his contributions on the field.
