Clayton Kershaw Bids Emotional Farewell at Dodger Stadium
Clayton Kershaw took a poignant farewell from Dodger Stadium following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 6-1 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the World Series on October 25, 2023. The 37-year-old pitcher, who has dedicated his entire 18-year career to the Dodgers, reflected on his time at the iconic venue while his children played nearby, collecting baseballs he tossed into the crowd. Kershaw’s wife, Ellen, donned his No. 22 jersey and shared an emotional moment with her husband, as the couple anticipates the arrival of their fifth child.
This loss marked Kershaw’s final game at home, as he announced his retirement from professional baseball last month. Despite his extensive experience and past accolades, Kershaw did not take the mound during this decisive game, having worked out of the bullpen throughout the postseason. The Dodgers now face elimination as they head to Toronto for Game 6 on October 27, 2023.
Kershaw’s postseason presence had been limited. He was not included on the Dodgers’ roster for the National League Wild Card Series but was added for the division series. His most notable appearance came during a high-pressure moment in Game 3, where he helped secure a 6-5 victory after a grueling 18-inning battle. With the bases loaded, Kershaw faced Nathan Lukes, ultimately getting the critical out that ended the inning amidst thunderous applause from the crowd.
Kershaw’s illustrious career is marked by remarkable achievements, including three Cy Young Awards and a Most Valuable Player award in 2014. During his prime from 2010 to 2015, he led the National League in earned run average (ERA) five times and strikeouts three times. His standout season in 2014 featured an impressive record of 21-3, a 1.77 ERA, and 233 strikeouts.
Before Game 5, the Dodgers honored Kershaw by replaying a video showcasing his career highlights, including the moment he achieved his 3,000th strikeout in July 2023. Additionally, FOX Sports aired a heartfelt tribute during its Game 4 broadcast, featuring narration by rapper-actor Ice Cube.
In one of his final gestures on the field, Kershaw turned to the stands to wave goodbye, a moment captured by fans who will remember his contributions to the team and the sport. As the Dodgers prepare for their next challenge, the legacy of Clayton Kershaw remains firmly etched in the history of the franchise and Major League Baseball.
