Colorado QB Julian Lewis to Redshirt, Will Miss Season Finale
Colorado true freshman quarterback Julian Lewis will not participate in the Buffaloes’ season finale against Kansas State on December 2, 2023, to preserve his redshirt status. Head coach Deion Sanders confirmed this decision during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing Lewis’ long-term development. “I’ve made a decision that JuJu is gonna redshirt. That’s my decision. I want what’s best for the kid, what’s best for his family, what’s best for this wonderful university,” Sanders stated.
Given that Colorado holds a record of 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the Big 12 Conference, the upcoming game holds little significance for the program’s postseason aspirations. The decision to redshirt Lewis allows him to retain four years of eligibility moving forward, a vital aspect for his future in college football.
This season, Lewis appeared in four games, including starting in the last two matches, where the team faced defeats against West Virginia and Arizona State. Sanders noted Lewis’ competitive spirit, acknowledging, “I’m not going to say he was happy, because he’s a competitor. He wants to compete; he wants to play.”
Lewis took over the starting role from Kaidon Salter, a transfer from Liberty University, earlier this month after making a notable impact during a game against Arizona. Despite high expectations following his standout career at Liberty, where he threw for 56 touchdowns over four seasons, Salter struggled to find his rhythm at Colorado. He has recorded 1,242 yards, along with 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions this season.
In light of Lewis’ absence, Sanders announced that Salter will start against the Wildcats. Ryan Staub, who started one game this year, will serve as Salter’s backup. Lewis finishes the season with 589 passing yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions, showcasing his potential as a promising quarterback for the Buffaloes.
As the team prepares for their final game, the focus shifts to the future. Preserving Lewis’ eligibility may prove to be a strategic decision that benefits both the player and the program in the coming years.
