Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Falls Short in 14-13 Semifinal Clash
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s pursuit of a championship in the Minnesota Class 3A football playoffs ended dramatically with a narrow 14-13 loss to Waseca in the semifinals on November 15, 2023, at U.S. Bank Stadium. The decisive moment came when Waseca defensive lineman Brady McKenna sacked DGF quarterback Brady Wadena on fourth down, sealing the Bluejays’ victory.
In a suspenseful finale, the Rebels, trailing by just one point, advanced deep into Waseca territory. A critical 21-yard reception by DGF wide receiver Michael Whitney, which came after a deflection off teammate Mason Tysver, brought the Rebels to the Waseca 28-yard line. Following a 1-yard carry by Jace Baumgartner, they faced a pivotal 4th and 4 with just over a minute remaining. However, the sack by McKenna ended their hopes, marking a disappointing conclusion to a season that finished with a record of 9-3.
“It’s not just a team here,” Wadena reflected after the game. “It’s truly a family. That’s what’s the hardest about this loss, losing this family, losing the brothers.”
With this victory, Waseca advanced to the Prep Bowl XLIII Class 3A championship, where they will compete against the winner of the Minneapolis North Community versus Annandale matchup on November 22, 2023, at 1 p.m.
The Bluejays’ defense played a crucial role, limiting DGF’s offense to just 1 of 10 on third downs and 4 of 7 on fourth downs. “We stress all the little plays,” said Waseca wide receiver Deron Russell, who has committed to play at North Dakota State. “When it comes to fourth down, stops matter in this type of game. We just made plays.”
In a game characterized by swings of momentum, Baumgartner’s impressive 20-yard rushing touchdown at 8:42 in the fourth quarter brought DGF within one point. The Rebels had executed a swift 75-yard drive in just four plays, aided by significant gains from both Baumgartner and Wadena. Unfortunately, their extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the score at 14-13.
Earlier in the game, Wadena had connected with Nolan Verdi for a 26-yard touchdown, leveling the score at 7-7 with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter. Verdi’s catch came as he maneuvered past a Bluejays defender along the left sideline.
Waseca had initially taken the lead in the game with a 4-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Kellen Klinger at 10:20 in the fourth quarter, following a key 35-yard pass to wide receiver Ethan Hiller.
DGF head coach Anthony Soderberg praised his team’s effort throughout the season, noting their commitment and work ethic. “They just bought in and they did a fantastic job,” he stated, underscoring the collective resilience that defined the Rebels’ journey.
As the team prepares to graduate 13 seniors, the impact of this season will resonate beyond the final score. The Rebels’ determination and camaraderie have left a lasting impression, marking a significant chapter in their football history.
