Flacco Leads Bengals to Thrilling Comeback Victory Over Steelers
CINCINNATI — In a remarkable turnaround, Joe Flacco guided the Cincinnati Bengals to a 33-31 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 15, 2024, just nine days after his trade from the Cleveland Browns. The veteran quarterback, who was uncertain about his future just ten days prior, showcased his skill and experience, leading the Bengals to snap a four-game losing streak.
Flacco, playing in his 18th NFL season, completed 31 of 47 passes for 342 yards, throwing three touchdowns without any interceptions. The game-winning moment came as he directed the offense downfield in the final moments, culminating in a 36-yard field goal from kicker Evan McPherson with merely seven seconds remaining. Flacco reflected on the emotional significance of the victory, stating, “It felt like I might not, to be honest with you. It’s pretty special.”
Flacco’s Impact on the Bengals
This victory is particularly poignant for the Bengals (3-4), marking their first win since starting quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a turf toe injury in Week 2. Burrow, who watched from the sidelines with a walking boot on his left foot, witnessed Flacco’s impressive performance, which prevented a potential collapse after the Bengals had led for most of the game.
With less than three minutes remaining, the Bengals found themselves trailing by a point after a 68-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth. Flacco responded decisively, connecting with wide receiver Tee Higgins for a pivotal 28-yard completion that placed the team within field goal range, setting up McPherson’s clinching kick.
McPherson expressed enthusiasm for Flacco’s arrival, stating, “I love his attitude and what he brings to the team. He’s done a really good job connecting with guys on really short notice.”
Key Player Performances
Alongside Flacco, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase made headlines with a franchise-record 16 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown. This achievement marked Chase’s ninth game with over 150 receiving yards, surpassing the legendary Jerry Rice for the second-most in the first five seasons of an NFL career. Chase praised the Bengals’ decision to acquire Flacco, emphasizing, “It’s honestly good having him here for us. The organization made a big jump on him.”
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor acknowledged Flacco’s wealth of experience, particularly in a game that Cincinnati desperately needed to win. “It’s easy for him,” Taylor stated, while also noting the extensive preparation Flacco undertook upon joining the team. “He’s so experienced in this situation. You gain a lot of confidence from that because he goes out there, and it’s not too big.”
Flacco, reflecting on his quick adaptation, shared insights into his family’s support, noting that they likely felt relief to see him compete again. “I can’t wait to talk to my wife tonight and just hear it in her voice,” he remarked. “Talking to [family] reminds you of how special this is.”
The Bengals’ victory over the Steelers not only reinvigorated their season but also showcased Flacco’s enduring talent as he continues to make impactful plays late in games. As Cincinnati aims to build on this momentum, Flacco’s leadership will undoubtedly be crucial in the weeks to come.
