Kidd Evaluates Flagg’s Future as Mavs’ Point Guard After Preseason
The Dallas Mavericks celebrated a convincing victory against the Los Angeles Lakers, winning 121-94 in their final preseason game at T-Mobile Arena. After the match, head coach Jason Kidd spoke about the performance of rookie Cooper Flagg, who has recently transitioned to the starting point guard position. Although Kidd praised Flagg’s efforts, he refrained from confirming whether the 18-year-old will open the regular season in this key role.
Kidd highlighted Flagg’s contributions during the preseason, particularly in two games as a point guard, where he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. Flagg’s adaptability was evident as he shifted from his previous position as a forward, a role he held during his time at Duke University. The Mavericks’ lineup against the Lakers featured several notable players, including Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II.
Kidd remarked on Flagg’s performance, stating, “He’s done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team.” Despite the positive feedback, Kidd pointed out that the Mavericks’ offense struggled at the start of the game, falling behind 22-10 before Flagg was substituted out during the first quarter. The coach expressed concerns about spacing in the lineup, particularly regarding playmaking and perimeter shooting, as the starters managed to shoot only 3-of-15 from beyond the arc during the game.
In his own assessment, Flagg acknowledged areas for improvement, stating, “I made some mental lapses today, time and score situations. Got to know [and] be aware of what’s on the clock at all times.” He recognized that defensive lapses allowed Lakers player Gabe Vincent to score 18 points, including five three-pointers, within the first few minutes of the game.
Kidd emphasized the challenges that come with playing in the NBA, particularly for a young player like Flagg. “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2 or 6-8, when you’re in a pick-and-roll in this league, it’s hard,” he explained. The coach remains optimistic about Flagg’s development, stating, “With his competitiveness, he’s going to figure it out sooner than later.”
As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, the decision regarding Flagg’s position remains open. Kidd indicated that the team still has time to evaluate their options before finalizing the roster. The balance between Flagg’s potential and the team’s performance will be crucial as Dallas aims for success in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
