Norfolk Admirals Suffer Defeat in Series Opener Against Trois-Rivières
The Norfolk Admirals faced a challenging start to their playoff series, falling 5-2 to the Trois-Rivières Lions on October 20, 2023. This opening match in the ECHL playoffs highlighted both the offensive prowess of the Lions and the struggles faced by the Admirals on the ice.
The game took place at the Centre de la Nature in Trois-Rivières, where the Lions took an early lead, dominating play for much of the first period. They scored three goals before the Admirals could respond, showcasing a strong home advantage. The Admirals managed to find the net twice, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit established by their opponents.
Throughout the first period, the Lions’ aggressive attack was evident. Their first goal came just five minutes into the game, with a powerful shot from forward Mathieu Lemay. The Lions continued to build momentum, adding two more goals before the Admirals could break through.
In the second period, the Admirals began to rally. Scoring their first goal on a power play opportunity, Jared VanWormer found the back of the net, igniting hopes for a comeback. This goal, however, was followed quickly by a response from the Lions, who scored their fourth goal just two minutes later.
The final period saw the Admirals push harder, with several attempts to narrow the gap. They managed to score a second goal from Brandon McNally, but the Lions sealed their victory with a final goal. The Admirals’ defense struggled throughout the match, facing significant pressure from the Lions’ forwards.
After the game, Admirals’ coach Mark Wotton emphasized the need for improvement as the series continues. “We need to tighten up defensively and capitalize on our opportunities,” he stated. “We have to regroup and come back stronger in the next game.”
Looking ahead, the Norfolk Admirals will have the chance to even the series on October 21, 2023, as they prepare for a critical rematch against the Lions. Given the stakes of the ECHL playoffs, both teams will be eager to secure a win to gain momentum in the series. The Admirals will need to refine their strategy and strengthen their performance if they hope to remain competitive.
