Rasmus Dahlin Returns to Sabres as Fiancée Recovers from Surgery
Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has rejoined his team following a leave of absence to support his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, as she recovers from a heart transplant. Dahlin returned just in time for the game against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, bringing a renewed sense of hope to the Sabres.
Matovac’s health issues began last summer during a vacation in France, where she experienced sudden heart failure. She received immediate medical attention and underwent a life-saving procedure. While Dahlin started the new season with the Sabres, Matovac remained in Sweden for recovery, prompting him to leave the team on November 7, 2023, to be by her side.
Dahlin expressed admiration for Matovac, stating, “She’s an absolute warrior. She grinds every day, and she gets better every day.” His words reflect both his personal commitment and the emotional weight he has carried throughout the season.
Coach Lindy Ruff highlighted the positive impact of Dahlin’s return on the team. “Whenever you get your captain back, it’s a jolt for the team, and I think everybody was excited to see him,” Ruff noted. Dahlin’s leadership is pivotal, especially as he has been with the Sabres since being drafted first overall in 2018.
Despite the challenges posed by Matovac’s health, Dahlin has maintained an impressive performance on the ice. He has tallied nine points in 14 games, averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game. His ability to balance personal challenges while contributing significantly to the team underscores his resilience and dedication.
As Dahlin resumes his role, the Sabres look forward to leveraging his experience and skill as they navigate the remainder of the season. The team’s morale has undoubtedly received a boost, and fans await his performance in the upcoming match against the Red Wings.
With Matovac’s recovery progressing, Dahlin’s focus will now shift back to hockey, where he aims to lead the Sabres to success on the ice.
