Sixers Show Promise with 6-4 Start Amid Mixed Performances
The Philadelphia 76ers have kicked off the 2025-26 NBA season with a respectable 6-4 record, highlighting their growth compared to last year’s difficult start. As they prepare to face the Boston Celtics for the third time in 20 days, the team has demonstrated resilience, overcoming a series of close losses. Despite facing some ongoing challenges, the Sixers’ current performance suggests a promising trajectory.
As the first ten games of the season have unfolded, several key statistics reveal the dynamics shaping the Sixers’ early season. Central to the discussion is Joel Embiid, who has averaged 30.3 points per 36 minutes, showcasing his scoring ability even within a stringent minutes restriction. After a lackluster season opener where he scored just four points, Embiid has rebounded impressively. In a recent game against Toronto, he logged his highest minutes of the season at 25:57 and scored 29 points, shooting 10-16 from the field and 8-9 from the free-throw line. His offensive presence continues to be a critical asset for the Sixers, drawing defensive attention and creating space for teammates.
Despite his scoring success, Embiid’s defensive contributions have been less robust. The Sixers’ Defensive Rating stands at 126.0 points allowed per 100 possessions with him on the floor, exposing vulnerabilities that opponents have exploited. While Embiid has shown flashes of improvement as a shot-blocker, his lateral mobility remains a concern, impacting the team’s overall defensive effectiveness.
Another standout for the Sixers has been Tyrese Maxey, who has emerged as a leading scorer with a total of 332 points across the first ten games. Averaging 30.2 points per game, Maxey is playing at a superstar level, second only to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in scoring. His improved ability to draw fouls and reach the free-throw line has further enhanced his scoring capacity, positioning him as a nightmare for opposing defenses.
The emergence of rookie VJ Edgecombe has also been notable. Averaging 16.3 points per game, he has demonstrated versatility by contributing 5.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists, showing an ability to impact the game beyond just scoring. His adaptability and maturity have stood out, making him a promising long-term asset for the franchise.
The Sixers have also experimented with three-guard lineups, featuring Maxey, Edgecombe, and Quentin Grimes. This combination has yielded a strong Net Rating of +17.7 per 100 possessions, driven by an impressive 121.8 Offensive Rating and a commendable 104.2 Defensive Rating. The success of this strategy highlights Head Coach Nick Nurse‘s willingness to embrace innovative approaches to maximize his roster’s strengths.
Despite these positive indicators, the Sixers have faced challenges in defensive rebounding, with a rate of 67.1%, ranking as the seventh worst in the league. The team’s rebounding effort has improved, but maintaining consistency remains an issue, particularly in smaller lineups. The anticipated return of Paul George, a nine-time All-Star, is expected to bolster both offensive and defensive stability as the season progresses.
Looking at offensive statistics, Kelly Oubre Jr. has been a reliable contributor, averaging 38.3% from three-point range, showcasing consistency in his shooting. Oubre’s ability to start every game and contribute on both ends has made a significant impact on the team’s success.
While the 76ers have made strides in various areas, they continue to struggle during third quarters, holding the league’s worst Net Rating at -36.3. Coach Nurse has acknowledged this ongoing issue, which has seen the team falter after halftime. Identifying and addressing these inconsistencies will be critical as they look to solidify their playoff position.
As the Sixers approach a critical matchup against the Celtics, their early season performance has painted a picture of a team ready to confront challenges head-on. With standout players like Embiid and Maxey leading the charge, the 76ers aim to build on their positive start and refine their strategy for sustained success throughout the season.
