Yankees Expect Trent Grisham to Build on Breakout Season
The New York Yankees are optimistic about Trent Grisham’s potential to maintain his impressive performance after a standout 2025 season. Following a lackluster track record with a 95 wRC+ over his first six seasons, Grisham surprised many by delivering a career year. He recorded highs of 34 home runs, 74 RBI, an .811 OPS, and a 129 wRC+, establishing himself as the Yankees’ primary center fielder and leadoff hitter against right-handed pitchers.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Grisham’s journey, stating, “This is a former first-round pick, talented guy. Everyone’s trajectory is not like this.” He emphasized the challenges of hitting in the major leagues, noting that many players find success as their careers progress. Grisham’s 2025 performance stands out, having greatly exceeded his previous offensive output.
Grisham recently accepted a one-year qualifying offer worth $22.025 million to remain with the Yankees, prompting discussions about whether he can replicate or build upon his success. General manager Brian Cashman expressed his belief in Grisham’s abilities, stating, “We believe his adjustments are real. His swing is made for Yankee Stadium.” Cashman acknowledged that Grisham was one of the top outfield options available, ranking third behind Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker in a competitive market.
While Grisham’s previous performance might suggest that a repeat of his 2025 season is unlikely, there are encouraging signs for the Yankees. He credits his recent success to a refined mental approach, having worked with sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella. Grisham noted, “I was thinking like crap for a few years and playing like crap,” indicating that his mindset has shifted positively.
Statistical analysis supports the notion that Grisham’s breakout season was not merely a fluke. He achieved personal bests with a 14.2 Barrel%, 91.1 mph average exit velocity, a .353 wOBA, and a .366 xwOBA, with the latter ranking in the 90th percentile among players. His 17.3 Chase% and 14.1 BB% were also in the top tier, showcasing his improved discipline at the plate.
Despite these advancements, some analysts argue that Grisham’s patience may have been excessive, as he pulled balls in the air at a career-high 23.5% clip. If he continues to make solid contact while capitalizing on this approach, he could sustain his power numbers.
The metrics indicate that Grisham has improved in key areas such as weak contact, solid contact, and getting under the ball. His bat speed has also seen a slight enhancement compared to the previous two seasons. Cashman reiterated the team’s confidence, stating, “All the underlying information that would lead you to believe real or not real, it points to the real arrow.”
As Grisham returns to a team he enjoys playing for, he is determined to prove that his 2025 performance was no anomaly. Should he succeed, he would enter free agency again at age 30, eligible for a lucrative contract without the drawbacks of a qualifying offer, which often limits player movement. Cashman mentioned the possibility of discussing a longer-term deal, saying, “I’m not saying that’s something we will pursue, but I wouldn’t be afraid to pursue it either.”
As the Yankees prepare for the upcoming season, Grisham stands at a critical juncture in his career. With renewed confidence and a supportive environment, he aims to confirm that his breakout year marks the start of a new chapter in his professional journey.
