Blackhawks Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Canucks After Disallowed Goal
BREAKING: The Chicago Blackhawks fell to the Vancouver Canucks in a devastating 3-2 shootout loss on October 27, 2023, marking their 11th consecutive defeat against the Canucks since 2021. The defeat stings as the Hawks squandered a two-goal lead, continuing their struggle to capitalize on opportunities.
This latest setback leaves the Blackhawks at 2-2-2 for the season, despite having led or been tied at the second intermission for six straight games. The crucial turning point came when Tyler Bertuzzi’s apparent go-ahead goal with 5:12 left in regulation was disallowed due to goaltender interference, a controversial call that left players and fans in disbelief.
Connor Murphy reported that referee Kelly Sutherland explained the ruling, stating the puck was lodged under Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen‘s pad before Bertuzzi pushed it in. “They looked at that as a dead puck even though the whistle still wasn’t blown,” Murphy relayed. However, the Hawks firmly believed the play resembled other scenarios that had resulted in valid goals. Coach Jeff Blashill expressed his commitment to challenging the call again, stating he would do so “10 out of 10” times.
“I won’t comment because I’ll probably get fined,” Bertuzzi said. “I think it was not that great of a call.”
Despite the disallowed goal, the Hawks managed to fend off two Canucks power plays, including one following the failed challenge. Goalie Spencer Knight made several key saves during overtime, but the Hawks were ultimately unable to score in the shootout, with Brock Boeser sealing the win for Vancouver.
“To not put together enough of a push to take a team’s will away — when you have them down against the ropes — is a big difference in winning and losing. It’s a learning lesson,” Murphy said, emphasizing the need for the team to close out games.
In an unexpected twist, a much-anticipated fight involving Hawks forward Jason Dickinson did not materialize. Back on March 15, 2023, Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood had vowed Dickinson would have to “answer the bell” for a hit that sidelined teammate Filip Chytil. Instead, Sherwood fought Bertuzzi, while Dickinson played through an upper-body injury, briefly exiting the game.
In a surprising turn of events, Hawks defenseman Louis Crevier engaged in a fight against Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle last weekend, marking his first NHL fight and his first since third grade. Crevier noted, “It shows he’s got that physicality and is going to bring more of that edge.” This fight came after Guhle delivered a significant hit on teammate Frank Nazar.
As the season unfolds, Coach Blashill praised rookie sensation Connor Bedard for his relentless competitiveness and drive to win. Bedard attempted seven shots during the game but failed to find the net. “He wants to win more than anything else,” Blashill remarked, underscoring Bedard’s commitment to building a winning culture.
The Blackhawks now face crucial decisions as they look to bounce back from this heartbreaking loss. The team’s ability to convert opportunities into victories will be critical in the coming games. Fans are left to wonder if the Blackhawks can overcome their recent misfortunes and turn their season around.
