California Poll Shows 56% Support for Prop. 50 Ahead of Vote
URGENT UPDATE: A new poll reveals that 56 percent of likely California voters support Proposition 50 just days ahead of the November 4, 2023 election, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape. This proposition, known as the Election Rigging Response Act, aims to allow Democrats to redraw congressional districts, potentially sidelining GOP representatives from the U.S. House.
In a survey conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California from October 7-14, only 43 percent of respondents indicated they would vote against the measure. This latest data follows a trend of increasing support for Prop 50, as campaign contributions from proponents far outpace those of opponents.
Governor Gavin Newsom, a key advocate for Prop 50, recently urged his supporters to halt donations, stating, “We have hit our budget goals and raised what we need in order to pass Proposition 50.” This call to action underscores the urgency as the election date approaches.
Critics, including spokesperson Amy Thoma Tan for the “No on Prop. 50” campaign, funded by mega-donor Charles Munger Jr., acknowledge the poll’s legitimacy but highlight their disadvantage in funding, claiming they are being outspent two-to-one. “It’s not entirely surprising,” Tan stated, noting their continued efforts to sway voters who have yet to submit their ballots.
Munger argues that Prop 50 would undermine California’s Independent Redistricting Commission, which is designed to create unbiased political boundaries. Proponents, led by Newsom and other Democrats, maintain that any gerrymandering would be temporary, emphasizing the broader implications of the measure on national politics.
Mark Baldassare, director of the Public Policy Institute, noted that the level of interest in Prop 50 is unusually high, with 68 percent of likely voters deeming the outcome of the special election “very important.” This marks the highest engagement he has witnessed in two decades of polling about ballot measures.
The stakes are immense: if passed, Prop 50 could enable Democrats to regain control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections and impede elements of former President Donald Trump’s agenda. However, with Republicans in other states also moving to redraw districts, the national significance of this measure remains uncertain.
As the election draws closer, all eyes are on California. The survey included 943 likely voters statewide, with a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points. Voter turnout and engagement will be critical in determining the fate of Proposition 50.
Stay tuned for further developments as California prepares for this pivotal vote.
