Experts Urge Daily Foot Washing to Combat Bacteria Risks
URGENT UPDATE: Experts are sounding the alarm on foot hygiene as new findings reveal billions of bacteria thrive on your feet, demanding greater attention during your daily shower routine. With the average foot containing 600 sweat glands per square centimeter, the risk of fungal infections rises significantly if proper washing techniques are neglected.
Dr. Tanya Nino, a dermatologist with Providence St. Joseph Medical Heritage Group, emphasizes that the soles of the feet are prone to moisture and bacteria, particularly in humid environments. “We call those eccrine glands,” Nino explained, highlighting the potential dangers when feet are not adequately cleaned.
In a statement, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that Americans should wash their feet daily to prevent the overgrowth of bacteria and fungi. Nino further notes that while a daily rinse is sufficient for most individuals, those with conditions like diabetes must be especially vigilant. “If you have a cut and you don’t know it, then yes, it can become an infection,” she cautioned.
The importance of washing feet daily was underscored by Krystal Malhotra, a nurse who spends 10 to 12 hours on her feet in closed-toe shoes. “Shower time is when I get to baby my feet,” she shared, detailing her meticulous washing routine. “I start at the top, then I do the bottom, then I go in between the toes every day.”
The skin between the toes can become particularly humid and conducive to bacteria, especially for those who frequently wear closed shoes. Nino warns that neglecting foot hygiene can lead to serious skin issues, including maceration, a condition that can break down the skin barrier and invite infections.
For those unsure about their foot hygiene habits, Nino advises that while some soaps can strip the skin of its natural barrier, a gentle rinse is typically adequate for daily care. “I don’t really advocate for soaping everything down,” she stated, urging individuals to focus on keeping their feet clean and dry.
Additionally, a crucial takeaway from this guidance is ensuring feet are thoroughly dried after washing, as dampness can promote bacteria growth. Despite the absence of strict requirements, Malhotra shared her commitment to daily foot washing, stating, “I’m so scared of getting stinky feet!”
In light of these developments, experts remind the public to reassess their foot hygiene practices. As more individuals engage in activities that lead to sweating and moisture, the call for proper foot care has never been more pressing.
Stay tuned for further updates on this important health topic that impacts everyone, particularly those in professions that require prolonged periods of being on their feet.
