Former MLB Catcher Jesús Montero Dies in Tragic Accident
URGENT UPDATE: Former MLB catcher Jesús Montero, known for his time with the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, has tragically died following a severe motorcycle accident in Caracas, Venezuela. He was just 35 years old.
Officials confirmed that Montero’s motorcycle crashed into a truck on October 4, 2023, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to multiple injuries, leaving a profound impact on the Venezuelan baseball community.
“Venezuelan baseball sadly bids farewell to Jesús Montero … leaving behind a legacy of effort and passion for the game,”
the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League stated on social media. The organization expressed gratitude for Montero’s contributions, highlighting the joy he brought to fans and the inspiration he provided to young athletes in the country.
The news of Montero’s passing has sent shockwaves through Venezuela, with fans and fellow players taking to social media to express their grief. The league noted,
“Today, baseball mourns his passing. But it also remembers him with gratitude: for every home run that thrilled the fans, for every day in which he proudly defended his country’s colors.”
Montero played a total of 18 games for the Yankees during the 2011 season and appeared in 208 games with the Mariners until his major league career ended in 2015. Over his brief career, he batted .253, hit 28 home runs, and recorded 104 RBIs.
In 2016, while part of the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system, he faced a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a stimulant, marking his second anti-doping violation after a previous ban in 2013.
Montero’s legacy extends beyond Major League Baseball; he played six seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League with teams like Navegantes del Magallanes, Cardenales de Lara, and Águilas del Zulia. He officially retired at age 31 following the 2020-2021 season.
