URGENT UPDATE: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has confirmed that all northern sites will be stocked with rainbow trout just in time for the highly anticipated opener on Saturday, October 18. This announcement comes after a brief delay earlier this fall due to unseasonably high temperatures, a trend increasingly common as climate change impacts local weather patterns.

With cooler temperatures returning, the IDNR is ready to ensure that anglers can enjoy a successful fishing experience. Nearby sites across northern Illinois include:

– **Cook County**: Axehead Lake, Belleau Lake, Busse Woods North, Green Lake, Horsetail Lake, Sag Quarry East, and Wolf Lake at William W. Powers State Recreation Area.
– **DuPage County**: Grove Lake, Pickerel Lake, Silver Lake.
– **Kankakee County**: Bird Park Quarry and Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park.
– **Kendall County**: Big Lake at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area.
– **Lake County**: Sand Lake at Illinois Beach State Park.
– **McHenry County**: Spring Grove Hatchery Pond and Lake Atwood.
– **Will County**: Lake Strini and Van Horn Woods.

Anglers should note that a valid fishing license and an inland trout stamp are required to fish in these stocked waters. The daily bag limit is set at five trout per person, making it a prime opportunity for fishing enthusiasts to gather their gear and head out this weekend.

However, not all waters are included in this stocking effort. The IDNR has posted details regarding 14 downstate waters that will not be stocked before the opener, a critical consideration for those planning their fishing trips.

This is an exciting moment for local fishing communities, as the trout opener marks the beginning of the fall fishing season. With fish actively stocked and weather conditions improving, expect crowded fishing spots and eager anglers ready to cast their lines.

Stay tuned for more updates as the trout opener approaches, and make sure to check local regulations before heading out. Don’t miss your chance to take part in this cherished tradition!
