UPDATE: The cause of death for renowned primatologist Jane Goodall has been confirmed as cardiopulmonary arrest, following her passing earlier this month at the age of 91. Details emerged through a death certificate obtained by TMZ, highlighting Goodall’s significant contributions to science and conservation.

The death certificate also lists epilepsy as one of Goodall’s conditions, although it remains unclear if this played a role in her death. No autopsy was performed. Cardiopulmonary arrest, a sudden loss of heart function, is often fatal. According to the Cleveland Clinic, only about 1 in 10 people survive such an event outside of a hospital setting.

Goodall’s passing was initially announced by the Jane Goodall Institute on October 1, 2025, stating she died of natural causes while in California during her speaking tour across the United States. The organization shared the news via social media, honoring her legacy as a UN Messenger of Peace and emphasizing her tireless advocacy for the environment.

Her groundbreaking work began in 1960 when she traveled to Tanzania at just 26 years old to study chimpanzees. Goodall’s pioneering research transformed our understanding of primates and their emotional and social complexities, forever changing how humans perceive their closest biological relatives.

“What the chimps have taught me over the years is they’re so like us. They’ve blurred the line between humans and animals,” Goodall said in a poignant statement to the Associated Press in 1997.

Goodall’s legacy is not only defined by her scientific achievements but also by her profound impact on conservation efforts worldwide. Following her death, many of her admirers and colleagues have pledged to continue her mission of protecting wildlife and restoring natural habitats.

As the news of her passing reverberates globally, many are reflecting on her contributions and the urgency of continuing her work. The Jane Goodall Institute urges supporters to honor her memory through action and awareness, ensuring her vision for a sustainable future endures.
