Kansas Stars Peterson, Dybantsa Downplay NBA Draft Buzz
UPDATE: Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and BYU wing AJ Dybantsa have both confirmed they are not focused on the upcoming NBA draft, despite being projected as the top two picks in ESPN’s latest 2026 mock draft. Speaking at the Big 12 media day in Kansas City on Wednesday, both athletes emphasized their commitment to their college teams this season.
Peterson, a five-star recruit standing at 6-foot-6, was named the Big 12 preseason freshman of the year and made the all-Big 12 preseason first team. “I handle it by not even paying any attention to it,” Peterson stated. “I’m just going to go out and play and win games.”
Meanwhile, Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 standout, recently made headlines after scoring 30 points in BYU’s exhibition loss to Nebraska. He has also been recognized on the Associated Press preseason All-America team. Reflecting on his road game experience, Dybantsa noted, “It was the first college game for the freshmen… I learned a lot. I felt more comfortable getting into an exhibition and just getting to [compete].”
Despite the buzz surrounding their potential NBA futures, both players are prioritizing their current collegiate goals. Dybantsa acknowledged their shared mindset, stating, “I don’t think [Peterson] is too worried about [going No. 1 overall]. He’s just really trying to prove himself…”
Peterson reiterated his focus on leadership and team success, saying, “I lead by example and I’m trying to do all the right stuff, both on and off the court.” His commitment to the Jayhawks is clear, as he aims to guide his team to victory.
In a notable mention, Cameron Boozer, a freshman from UCF, is also in the NBA conversation. After scoring 33 points in a recent game, UCF coach Johnny Dawkins praised Boozer’s competitive spirit and potential. “He’s a great basketball player and he still has room to grow,” Dawkins remarked, highlighting Boozer’s talent and future prospects.
The excitement around these young athletes continues to build as they prepare for the upcoming season, underscoring the high stakes in the Big 12 and the looming NBA draft.
As the season progresses, keep an eye on Peterson, Dybantsa, and Boozer as they aim to make their mark not just in college basketball, but potentially in the NBA as well.
