Massachusetts Nurse Charged with Tampering Oxy for Dementia Patient
BREAKING: A Massachusetts nurse, Lori Robertson, has been arrested and charged with tampering with oxycodone intended for a non-verbal dementia patient at a long-term care facility. This alarming development was confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office following an indictment filed this week.
Robertson, 65, allegedly altered prescription medication by removing oxycodone from its bottle and replacing it with a dangerous household cleaner. The incident occurred on March 31, 2023, while she was employed at a rehabilitation center in Amesbury, which provides chronic and post-acute care for vulnerable patients.
The federal indictment states, “Robertson tampered with the oxycodone with reckless disregard for the risk that another person would be placed in danger of death and bodily injury.” This serious offense is categorized as tampering with a consumer product and carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, along with a fine of up to $250,000.
Robertson was arraigned on Friday before Judge Paul Levenson, where she pleaded not guilty to the charges. Court records reveal that while federal prosecutors did not request detention, they imposed strict release conditions, which include prohibition of drug or alcohol use, no contact with the affected patient, and a ban on any employment that allows access to prescription medications.
A status conference has been scheduled for November 24, 2023, to discuss the next steps in this troubling case. As authorities investigate further, the implications of this incident raise significant concerns about patient safety and the integrity of healthcare practices.
This shocking allegation highlights the importance of vigilant oversight in healthcare settings, particularly for those caring for the most vulnerable populations, such as hospice and dementia patients. Community members and families are advised to stay informed as more details emerge regarding this urgent situation.
