Microsoft Confirms PS5 Launch for Flight Simulator 2024 on Dec 8
UPDATE: In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be available on PlayStation 5 starting December 8, 2023. This marks a historic moment as it is the first time the iconic flight simulation series is accessible on Sony’s platform.
Originally, Microsoft had dismissed the idea of porting the game to PS5, but a recent shift in strategy has opened the floodgates for Xbox titles to reach new audiences. Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, revealed in an exclusive interview that he initially pitched the idea of a PS5 version during the game’s development, only to be told “no” by Xbox executives. However, a proactive outreach from Sony changed everything.
Neumann shared that after seeing the success of Flight Simulator 2020 on Xbox, Sony expressed interest, leading to a partnership that has resulted in the upcoming PS5 launch. “It was probably a little bit before its time because I was told no,” Neumann stated. “Then, somebody from Sony who grew up with flight simulation thought it would be a great addition to the Sony portfolio.”
This shift in Xbox’s strategy to embrace multiplatform gaming is significant. As the gaming landscape evolves, the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 is expected to attract millions of new fans, particularly those who do not typically engage with PC gaming. Neumann highlighted that the game had grown from 120 GB at launch to 300 GB due to continuous updates and expansions.
The new PS5 version aims to utilize cloud technology, resulting in a more streamlined game client of just 8 GB. This innovation not only allows for easier access but also paves the way for future expansions to other platforms, including mobile devices and potentially the upcoming Switch 2.
Neumann emphasized the importance of optimizing the game for the PS5, stating, “We took it over in the last six months or so to really optimize everything.” The PS5 Pro version will offer enhanced graphics with a resolution of 3200×1800, providing a more immersive experience compared to the standard PS5 version.
In addition, the game will support PlayStation VR2, although Neumann indicated that further optimization is required before it can be fully launched. “We’re actually pretty close, but not 100% there, so we’re going to spend a few more months optimizing,” he explained.
Neumann also noted a significant trend toward using controllers for gameplay, a shift he anticipates will grow as more players engage with Microsoft Flight Simulator on PS5. “I always say Flight Simulator is a hobby, and once you go somewhere, you’re staying,” he added, hinting at the potential for a thriving community of players investing in specialized peripherals.
As the gaming world watches closely, the December launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 signals a pivotal change in how Xbox and PlayStation can collaborate, potentially reshaping the future of gaming.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the release date, and prepare for an exhilarating flight experience like never before.
