Nationwide No Kings Protests Erupt Today Amid Trump Tensions
UPDATE: Millions across the Bay Area and the nation are participating in the No Kings Day protests today, September 30, 2023, responding to escalating tensions over President Donald Trump‘s potential deployment of the National Guard. These urgent demonstrations aim to voice opposition to what many view as an abuse of power.
Demonstrators are expected at multiple locations in San Francisco, with reports of large gatherings planned to peacefully challenge the administration’s actions. Concerns have intensified following Trump’s announcement of a federal “surge” in cities to combat crime, which many fear could lead to excessive military presence in civilian areas.
Earlier this week, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong disapproval of Trump’s intentions, stating, “His latest assertion that he was going to come to San Francisco… it’s grossly illegal. It’s immoral. It’s rather delusional.” Newsom emphasized that there is no justification for such actions, especially when no specific protests are currently occurring at federal buildings.
The day’s protests have drawn criticism from Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, who labeled the events as “hate America rallies.” Nevertheless, organizers remain steadfast, expecting thousands to join the downtown San Francisco protest alone. Dianne McClure, Vice President of National Nurses United, stated, “We do not believe in one person or one group of people controlling our country. To threaten sending in the National Guard… just means that we’re effective in our organizing.”
In anticipation of the protests, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has assured the public that they will facilitate First Amendment rights while being prepared for any potential disruptions to safety. Notably, while Trump’s call to send in the National Guard has not been directly associated with today’s protests, similar measures are being implemented in states like Texas, where troops are deployed to Austin.
The protests are set to impact local traffic, with street closures scheduled from 1:15 PM to 2:00 PM affecting Market Street and surrounding areas. The following streets will be closed during this time:
– Market from Beale to Steuart
– Steuart from Market to Howard
– Spear from Market to Folsom
– Main from Market to Howard
From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, additional closures will occur on:
– Market from Eighth to Steuart
– Hyde from McAllister to Market
– Grove from Market to Van Ness
As these critical events unfold, the No Kings movement continues to gain momentum, advocating for a return to democratic principles free from autocratic influences. You can find the full list of protests happening across the Bay Area and nationwide on the No Kings website.
Stay tuned for live updates as the situation develops and more voices join the call for accountability and justice.
