UPDATE: New Orleans Pelicans center Kevon Looney has been sidelined by a significant left knee injury, confirmed by the team just moments ago. The injury, diagnosed as a proximal tibiofibular ligament sprain, is expected to keep Looney out for at least two to three weeks, directly impacting the team’s roster ahead of the regular season.

The injury occurred during a preseason exhibition against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on October 5, 2023. The Pelicans’ announcement today raises urgent concerns about their depth at the center position as they prepare to open the season on October 22 against Memphis.

At 6-foot-9, Looney is entering his 11th NBA season and was a vital part of three championship-winning teams with the Golden State Warriors. His ability to contribute, averaging 5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game throughout his career, made him a key free-agent acquisition this offseason under the new executive vice president of basketball operations, Joe Dumars.

With Looney out, the Pelicans will turn to their other centers, including Yves Missi, a promising 2024 first-round draft choice from Baylor. Missi had a strong rookie season, playing in 73 games, starting 67, and averaging 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. His performance will be critical as the team navigates the early part of the season without Looney.

The Pelicans’ leadership will closely monitor Looney’s recovery, emphasizing the importance of his return as they aim for a competitive season. Fans and analysts alike will watch closely as the team adjusts its strategy leading up to the season opener, where every game counts.

Stay tuned for further updates on Looney’s recovery timeline and the Pelicans’ preparations for the upcoming season.
