NIU’s Electric Microcar Set for Production, Launching Soon
UPDATE: NIU’s highly anticipated electric microcar, the NIUMM, is officially heading for production, confirmed at the EICMA 2025 in Milan. This urgent development marks a significant step for urban transportation, as the compact vehicle is poised to revolutionize city commuting.
The NIUMM, designed to cater to urban residents, operates on a dual battery system shared with NIU’s popular NQi scooters. This electric microcar can achieve a range of up to 70 km (approximately 43 miles) and speeds of 45 km/h (28 mph), adhering to the maximum speed allowance for L6e quadricycles. For existing NIU scooter owners, the vehicle’s dual battery feature may suffice, but an optional second pair of batteries can nearly double the range, enhancing practicality for city travel.
Officials have confirmed that the NIUMM is currently undergoing final homologation testing, a critical step before its commercial launch. Sieghart Michielsen, NIU’s Director of International, stated, “We are excited to bring the NIUMM to market, catering to the growing demand for compact electric vehicles in urban areas.”
The L6e quadricycle category has emerged as an essential solution for densely populated European cities. These vehicles are lightweight, limited to a maximum weight of 425 kg (excluding batteries), and can be operated with a moped license, making them accessible to a broader audience. Their affordability and ease of use appeal to teenagers, city dwellers, and older adults seeking alternatives to traditional cars.
The NIUMM joins the ranks of other successful L6e models like the Citroen Ami, which has gained popularity due to its minimalist design and affordability, priced around €7,000. Other notable vehicles in this segment include the Renault Twizy, Microlino, and Eli Zero, demonstrating a clear demand for small, efficient vehicles that navigate urban environments seamlessly.
As cities continue to embrace car-light futures, NIU is well-positioned to capitalize on this momentum with the NIUMM. While pricing and availability details remain under wraps, the company indicates that a launch is imminent.
Stay tuned for more updates on the NIUMM’s production and the impact it will have on urban mobility. This electric microcar could redefine how we think about commuting in crowded cities, making it a key development for the future of transportation.
