UPDATE: Two Rochester hockey teams are set to make history as they kick off Hockey Day Minnesota 2026 with an exciting opening game on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the United Heroes League rink in Hastings. This marks a significant moment in the annual week-long celebration of hockey, showcasing local talent and community spirit.

The matchup features the Century/John Marshall boys hockey team facing off against their rivals from Mayo High School. This game is not just a rivalry; it’s a chance for both teams to elevate Rochester’s presence in the hockey community. Coach Matt Erredge of Century/John Marshall expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s an awesome thing for Rochester hockey.”

The festivities leading up to the main event on January 24 have been meticulously planned. The televised games will include Hastings girls against Park-Cottage Grove and Hastings boys facing East Ridge. However, the early game featuring Rochester teams sets the stage for an unforgettable week of hockey.

Erredge’s initiative began six months ago when he toured the state-of-the-art outdoor facility, which boasts amenities comparable to a professional arena. After discussing the potential for Rochester’s involvement with Jeff Taffe, a former NHL player and current Chief Development Officer for United Heroes League, the wheels were set in motion for this historic encounter.

This game is part of a larger schedule that includes 23 games at the UHL rink during the week. The collaboration has garnered enthusiastic support from both schools’ activities directors, allowing the game to count as a home match for Century/John Marshall. “We’re rivals, but we’re also buddies,” Erredge noted, highlighting the camaraderie between the teams.

In addition to the rivalry game, Rochester Grizzlies will also participate in the Hockey Day festivities, playing against the Granite City Lumberjacks on January 23 at noon, just before the Iowa Wild take on the Milwaukee Admirals. This integration of local teams into a well-established event emphasizes the growing significance of Rochester in the hockey landscape.

As preparations ramp up, both teams are eager to make lasting memories. Mayo coach Matt Notermann expressed his excitement about the game, stating, “This is what it’s about, finding ways to make some memories and have some fun.” The outdoor setting and unique atmosphere promise to create a thrilling experience for players and fans alike.

With everything set, fans are encouraged to mark their calendars for this extraordinary event. The momentum is building, and the excitement is palpable.
