Samsung Launches Galaxy XR: Half the Price of Vision Pro, Available Now
UPDATE: Samsung has just launched the Galaxy XR, now available for purchase at $1,799.99. This innovative headset is positioned as a compelling alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro, costing roughly half as much and accompanied by over $1,000 in free offerings.
Unveiled in New York City, the Galaxy XR is powered by Android XR and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, promising an engaging user experience. Samsung’s Chief Operating Officer for Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Won-Joon Choi, stated, “With Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a brand-new ecosystem of mobile devices,” emphasizing its potential to revolutionize mobile AI and immersive experiences.
The device showcases features such as immersive 3D mapping powered by Google, allowing users to explore local restaurants and attractions in a unique, interactive way—though many may find these features more entertaining than practical. One demo had attendees navigating to pizza spots with immersive Google Maps, evoking responses like, “This is really cool! Also, I’d never use it,” highlighting the gap between novelty and daily utility.
Despite the impressive technology, some features left users questioning their everyday applicability. The spatial capture potential, reminiscent of Apple’s focus, was notably absent from discussions, although creators can easily enable spatial video on platforms like YouTube. Users can look forward to viewing a range of content in 3D, from videos to websites, enhancing the immersive experience.
However, the Galaxy XR is not designed for prolonged wear. After a 30-minute demo, users reported discomfort, raising concerns about the headset’s balance and weight distribution. The headset’s pass-through video quality allows for seamless interaction with the environment, but achieving zero lag remains a challenge.
The pricing strategy makes the Galaxy XR particularly enticing. While Apple’s Vision Pro retails at $3,499, Samsung’s offering, combined with the extensive Explorer Pack—including a year of AI Pro, YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, NBA League Pass, and more—can effectively lower the cost to around $800 for early adopters.
As the tech community gears up for this release, the Galaxy XR is poised to attract those interested in immersive technology at a more accessible price point. Samsung’s strategic launch aims to carve out a significant space in the evolving XR landscape, inviting consumers to explore the future of mobile interaction.
