UPDATE: A suspected arsonist has been arrested following a devastating apartment fire in Redwood City that occurred on the morning of November 1, 2023. Firefighters rushed to the scene on the 1300 block of Marshall Street at 7:35 a.m., where they found the blaze damaging three apartment units.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Eliaser Hernandez-Valadez, a resident of Redwood City. His arrest took place later that evening when he returned to the scene of the fire, according to the Redwood City Police Department.

“Investigators from the police and fire department learned the fire may have been intentionally set and a suspect was identified,” officials stated. The swift response ensured that all residents were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported. However, three individuals have been displaced due to the fire, and they are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

Hernandez-Valadez has been charged with arson to an inhabited dwelling, reckless burning, and probation violation. He is now booked at the San Mateo County Jail.
