Toyota’s New V-8 Engine Set to Revolutionize Lineup Beyond Supercars
UPDATE: Toyota’s innovative new V-8 engine is poised to exceed its initial supercar applications, with potential expansion into mainstream vehicles like the Land Cruiser and Lexus SUVs. In a groundbreaking interview with Australian media, Toyota’s head of powertrains, Takashi Uehara, confirmed that the new 4.0-liter V-8 could indeed fit under the hood of the Land Cruiser (LC300), broadening its usage significantly.
The urgency of this development cannot be overstated as it hints at a major shift in Toyota’s approach to engine design. Uehara revealed to Drive magazine that the modular design of the V-8 engine block is “somehow close” to the new 2.0-liter engine currently being tested in the concept-turned-prototype GR Yaris. This adaptability suggests that the V-8 could power a diverse range of vehicles, appealing to both performance enthusiasts and everyday drivers.
Toyota aims to engineer the V-8 as a diesel engine with a full hybrid setup, making it compliant with stringent emissions standards. Uehara specifically noted, “We don’t rely on the PHEV system,” indicating that the V-8 will be integrated into non-plug-in hybrid models. This strategic decision positions Toyota well in a market increasingly focused on eco-friendly technology.
As for power figures, Uehara stated that the target for the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is over 400 hp, while the electrically assisted V-8 could potentially produce a staggering 900 hp. However, these figures remain unofficial until confirmed by Toyota or its performance division, Gazoo Racing (GR).
This development raises exciting possibilities for several flagship models. The new V-8 is expected to be featured in the upcoming Lexus Sport Coupe and the highly anticipated Toyota “GR GT”, debuting on December 4. Uehara hinted that large vehicles such as the Land Cruiser, Sequoia, and Tundra could soon be equipped with this powerful hybrid engine, making them not only robust but also more environmentally friendly.
The implications of this engine innovation extend beyond just performance—Toyota’s push for economies of scale could lead to broader availability of this technology across various models. As the automotive industry pivots towards hybrid solutions, the introduction of the V-8 engine in popular vehicles will undoubtedly enhance Toyota’s competitive edge.
As news unfolds, automotive enthusiasts and consumers alike are eagerly watching for the next steps in Toyota’s ambitious plans. With the potential to reshape their entire lineup, the excitement surrounding the V-8 engine is palpable. Stay tuned for further updates as Toyota navigates this groundbreaking transition in engine technology.
